20th BIVAF

Focus: Here We Meet Us

BIVAF's 20th edition introduces 𝙁𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨, a new program that places a single work of video art at its center and presents it alongside another work that resonates with it. 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝙁𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨: 𝙃𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙒𝙚 𝙈𝙚𝙚𝙩 𝙐𝙨 centers on Choi Seung-woo's film Winter Days (2025), shown together with Kim Min's photographic series Co-Suicide (2019–). Figures endlessly climbing and descending alleys and stairways; images accumulated over years of staring out of windows while confined to buses and trains for three or four hours a day. Through these works, the exhibition looks at bodies that keep moving within the repetitive circulation imposed by the city's hierarchies.

On a winter day, Min-woo leaves his rural hometown and moves to the city. Meanwhile, countless people go about their daily lives in their own places.

I'm still afraid of speed. As long as we're driving, death is always in the present progressive. If we don't want to die, we should be grateful for the ear-splitting horns, the drivers' vicious curses, and the speed cameras. Every day, people get crushed because of small mistakes on the road, yet every day we act as if it's nothing: we sit on leather seats, buckle our seatbelts, press the pedals, roll down the windows, and turn up the volume.

As a kid, I often went on trips in my parents' car. I can't remember where we went, but the evenings coming home are still vivid. My road trip. Beyond the car window, the sun was always setting, and the pop songs that ruled the '80s played on the car stereo. Aruba, Jamaica, Kokomo, Bermuda, Hotel California: songs about lovely, dreamlike places that existed only in the imagination. Having fallen asleep along the way, I'd wake from my dream, tormented by carsickness, get out on the highway, and throw up.

On my commutes to and from work, crossing the city's boundary, I was stuck on buses and trains for three or four hours a day on average, and there was nowhere for my soul to get some shut-eye. All I could do was look around for a seat, discreetly put in my earphones, and try to sleep in a corner. The only thing I could do to save myself was look out the window. With no other choice, I watched the same commuting scenery pass by, day after day. Maybe there's something out there. I hope there's something. Sad or happy, I don't care. I just hope I feel something. Facing the same scenery differently and trying to understand it anew was my only way out. I had to dig through time that felt like garbage to find beauty. If it weren't for that, I never could have endured those long hours. It didn't last long. This isn't the road trip I wanted, after all. When the spellbinding speed of the passing scenery comes to a stop, I have to go through it all again: getting on and getting off, going to work and coming home, carsickness and throwing up. When will drivers and passengers realize that crossing back and forth over the city's boundary at high speed is exactly the same as crossing back and forth over the boundary between life and death?

I still love road trips. I wish the cars and the speed would stop, but I can't stop imagining leaving for somewhere every day. Is there such a thing as a road trip you can take without a car? We'd all gather together and move at our own pace, then stop in empty parking lots and on empty roads, drop our phones on the ground, lay our weary bodies down on benches, and look for stars until we fall asleep. Hoping that the world, and all of us, will never grow any further.
